Kneeling Chair

Many of us have suffered back pain after long working sessions. This is related, largely, to posture. When we get tired or over stressed, most people tend to slouch which puts the muscles in our back on overtime. Kneeling chairs can help.

Kneeling chairs are designed at an angle and have special “leg rests” designed so that the sitter can kneel as they work. The chairs often have the sitter leaning slightly forward, but at a comfortable angle and safely positioned to improve our posture.

There are several models of kneeling chairs available, ranging from very simple, stripped down to basics, models to others that have built in desktops and back rests for when the user opts not to kneel.

Kneeling chairs are available at most office furniture retailers. Purchasing in person allows you to try the chair before you buy it to be sure it’s a good fit for you.  You may also purchase a kneeling chair online from a number of retailers at a lesser cost, but will sacrifice the option of being able to try it first.

The first time sitting in a kneeling chair can be difficult because it seats us in a way we are not accustomed to. At first, it may even be painful to sit in a kneeling chair because our bodies have to adjust to being seated properly after months or years of improper care.

Different chairs have different weight limitations, so it is important to check the weight limits of your kneeling chair to ensure that anyone who may use it will be safe.

Also, you will want to be sure that the chair adjusts to different heights and positions. You will also want to be sure the chair and knee cushions are padded and comfortable to use for long periods of time. Because seats and knee widths vary, also make sure that the cushions on your kneeling chair are a good fit for you.

The American National Standards Institute and the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association are organizations that have established standards for the furniture industry. When purchasing your kneeling chair, be sure that it reaches at least their minimum qualifications for its intended use.

If you have knee or shin problems, it is wise to consult with your physician before purchasing a kneeling chair.
Kneeling chairs have helped many improve posture and decrease back pain and stress in their work lives. If you suffer from back pain, get your doctors advice about a kneeling chair. You may be surprised how little the cure can be!
